Workshop on "How to Write Effective Policy Papers and Op-eds" by Dr Jan BOGUSŁAWSKI | Practice & Apply Lab

The Practice & Apply Lab at the College of Europe in Natolin had the pleasure to organise two separate workshops on "How to Effectively Write Policy Papers and Op-eds" delivered by Dr Jan BOGUSŁAWSKI.

The workshop on "Writing effective Policy Papers" provided students with a solid understanding of the writing process necessary to produce a high-quality policy paper. Students explored the key differences between policy papers, academic research, and journalistic articles. The session covered essential steps in the research process, identifying the target audience for policy papers, and tips on crafting a clear and effective narrative supported by data. Style, language, and structure were also be discussed, ensuring that students leave with a clear sense of how to write impactful policy papers that influence decision-making.

Another workshop on "Writing effective Op-Eds" helped students understand how to craft high-quality, concise, and relevant opinion pieces on current issues. Students explored key decisions regarding style, structure, and length, while learning how to select compelling topics, connect with media editors, and effectively pitch op-ed ideas. The session focused on building clear, persuasive arguments in a limited word count, emphasising clarity and impact over length. By the end of the workshop, students had a clear roadmap for publishing their articles in high-impact media outlets.
