Careers of alumni
During the past twenty years, the advanced MA in EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies has formed a network of more than 1600 alumni with about 70 different nationalities.
These alumni hold a wide variety of impactful professional positions all around the world. Many of them work as diplomats, European Union officials, national or international civil servants, while others pursue careers in academia, in civil society organisations or in the private sector.
The majority of the alumni work in the public sector and roughly a quarter each in the European Union or in national public administrations. More precisely, a review of the available online biographical profiles of more than 1100 graduates conducted in December 2024 yielded the following results, which correspond as well to surveys carried out by e-mail:
24.5% of the programme’s alumni work for EU institutions or bodies, including the European External Action Service (4.6%),
23.9% work in the national public sector, either as diplomats (9.8%) or in national public administrations (14.1%),
11.7% work in consultancies and law firms,
10.1% hold positions in academia and think tanks,
8.8% work for international organisations, such as the United Nations or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
6.4% are employed in non-governmental organisations,
and the remaining 14.6% work in a variety of functions in the private sector.
