Visit of Commissioner Maria Luís Albuquerque to the College of Europe in Bruges

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, we were pleased to welcome Ms Maria Luís ALBUQUERQUE, European Commissioner for Financial Services and the Savings and Investments Union, to our Bruges campus for an exchange with students from the Johannes Gutenberg Promotion.

The discussion focused on a range of issues currently at the centre of the European Union’s financial and economic agenda. Commissioner Albuquerque addressed the future of the Savings and Investments Union, Europe’s investment needs, the development and competitiveness of European capital markets, and the broader question of financial sovereignty. Students also had the opportunity to engage directly with the Commissioner on the international role of the euro and on the challenges of strengthening Europe’s financial position in an increasingly fragmented geopolitical and economic environment.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to complement their academic work with direct dialogue with a senior European policymaker, allowing them to raise questions, exchange views and gain first-hand insight into the policy debates shaping Europe’s financial future.
