Language Requirements
The two working languages of the College of Europe are English and French. Students must have a minimum level of C1 in English and of B1/B2 in French. A limited number of students with a low level of French (A2) may be admitted on condition that they follow an intensive course over the summer.
Unlike in the other study programmes at the College of Europe, language courses form an integral part of the EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies programme. Students follow a compulsory language course throughout the academic year.
Language courses are offered in the two working languages of the European Commission besides English (that is, French and German), as well as in the other UN languages Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic. Students will follow either a French course or, if a sufficient level of French has already been acquired, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese or Arabic.
Except for French and Spanish, these courses are offered exclusively at a beginners' level, thus allowing students to add another language to their skills. Since language classes will be kept small, the College cannot guarantee that students will always be offered their preferred foreign language.
In their application, students should preferably submit external language certificates. All international language certificates are accepted as long as they indicate the CEFR levels. Students may also supply a university certificate or a recommendation letter written by a language professor or teacher referring to the applicant's language levels in relation to the CEFR levels.
